The Power of Our Thoughts
PART I
You Are What You Think! We live in a world full of thoughts, and our thoughts create our experiences and perspectives. Throughout each day we think LOTS of thoughts. The thoughts we think repeatedly can begin to shape our reality and affect our actions, attitude and mood.
The thoughts and the language we use to speak to ourselves is very POWERFUL. In fact, I believe the most important relationship we have is the one with ourselves, so the thoughts that we think and the way in which we communicate with ourselves is key to a balanced and peace-filled life.
When we are unhappy with our life, we often seek to change things in our life. We assume that change starts from the outside. We believe that changing or transforming our environment will create the change we want and hope to see, however that is not often the case.
The environment might play a small role in changing our situation, but what if the actual cause is our thinking. Our thinking directly correlates to how we feel, and how we feel affects how we act. In short, we are what we think. So if we get the inside right, the outside will fall into place.
Change your thoughts, change your life.
My thoughts had a significant impact on my healing and continue to. I truly believe the power of thoughts and the language we use to speak to ourselves is the key to inner peace and healing. Over a decade ago I learned about an interesting experiment that demonstrated the power of our thoughts and words. Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese scientist, who dedicated his life to studying water, claimed that our thoughts, feelings, words, and even names affect the molecular structure of water and hence our physical reality. Dr. Emoto discovered that water droplets that had been repeatedly exposed to positive or negative words profoundly changed the water’s color, shape, and symmetry.
One of his experiments involved placing water into small jars, writing a word or phrase on a label taped to each jar, and leaving them overnight on their own. Some words had positive associations such as “self love,” “beauty,” and “passion.” Other jars had negative words, such as “evil,” “hatred,” or phrases such as “you disgust me.” When small amounts of each jar were frozen and then observed under a microscope, the results were astonishing! The positive words formed beautiful, symmetrical crystals that looked very similar to snowflakes while the negative words were discolored, chaotic, and fragmented (see picture below).
Dr. Emoto took the experiment a step further to see what would happen to a large amount of water over an extended period of time. His famous “Rice Experiment” involved putting the same amount of rice in three different jars and then adding the same amount of distilled water into the jars. He then closed the jars and labeled each jar with a different word. On the first jar, he labeled it with the phrase “Thank You”; the second jar with the phrase “You are an idiot”; and the third jar was left with a blank label. Everyday, for 30 days, he visited each jar and read aloud the corresponding label to the jar for one minute and tracked the changes in each jar over the month.
By the end of the month he had noticed that the water in the jar labeled “Thank you” had started to ferment, giving off a strong, pleasant aroma. The water in the jar that was labeled “You are an idiot” turned black with an unpleasant shape. The most interesting result was the last jar with the blank label that had been ignored the entire time. It turned into a nasty green-blue color as opposed to staying near its original color. His results were consistent with his previous experiments with smaller jars, and it appeared that there was a trend.
Dr. Emoto concluded his findings by stating that water is a “blueprint for our reality” and that emotional “energies” and “vibrations” could change the physical structure of water. His findings were mindblowing to me! Especially given about 70% of our human body, and almost two thirds of the world, is made up of water.
So think about the thoughts you think or language you use when thinking or speaking about your own body. It is reasonable to believe these thoughts are impacting the molecular structure of the water molecules in your body and subsequently your body’s physical experience! Our thoughts have power - the language we use to talk to ourselves is powerful and impactful.
So how do we think more positively?
Next week, I’ll be sharing the physical and mental benefits to focusing on the good in any given situation. I’ll also share strategies for shifting your thought patterns so that thinking positive becomes easier and more natural.
